Lu’mon Macarons for Valentines

So its not a Restaurant review but it certainly is delicious. I thought I’d share some of my Valentines present from Boyfriend. He decided to spoil me with some treats from Lu’mon. He did get a hint after an article I found on HerCanberra for local valentines treats but kudos to him for the follow through.

Lu’mon Macarons is a Canberra business, established in 2013 by Simon and Lucy Hulm. A combination of their names = Lu’mon. Plus it means a few other cute things in translation.

Lu’mon’s mission as per their website is to deliver macarons with attention to detail, quality ingredients and amazing flavours – every bite is better than the last and needless to say mission accomplished.

But because it was Valentines they came as little hearts, SWOON!!!

Each macarons was a different flavour and I was especially generous and decided to share. We made it through Honeycomb,

and White Chocolate (i think)

I was so keen to not eat them all in one go that the shells ended up getting a little too hard and ruined the flavour. I wouldn’t definitely eat them in 5 days for the optimum taste next time! However I certainly wasn’t going to waste them so I simply spilt them and ate the filling like in an oreos commerical. I had vanilla bean, snickers, fairy bread and smores (YUM!)

You can see the little glaring eyes staring at me from Puppy. Dont worry though I shared the love, only a little though 🙂

You can order off the website or buy them at the Handmade Markets , Farmers Daughter and i think at Mint Road as well.  Definitely worth sourcing.

Plus an Insta picture – @ladyjodie. If you dont Instagram it, it didnt happen.

Lighthouse

Lighthouse for many years was synonymous with a bad reputation. Cheap drinks, Drunk college kids and the on point nickname of Fighthouse, kept me away from the establishment, especially in daylight hours. With a recent renovation, and less Wednesday night visits, I’ve been beginning to see the light, particularly the sunlight that shines on the vast deck space, making Lighty a perfect spot for a casual beer and a feed.

I’m not sure when it happened but Lighthouse food got good, and not just pub food good, restaurant quality good. They serve what I would describe as modern Australia, high quality pub style food.If you think that’s a mouth full, just wait until you see there chicken schnitzels. I’m a creature of habit and 9 times out of 10, I order the chicken schnitzel.

I’m reassured the skewers were tasty but they do not compare to the schnitzel. That much is clear.

When in doubt, ALWAYS order the schnitzel. No exceptions

Hero Sushi

Hero Sushi is a sushi train recently opened in the ground floor of the Canberra Centre. Casting your mind back not too long ago, there were not many sushi options in Canberra outside Sizzle Bento, but with the additional of Sushi Bay in Belconnen and now Hero in the city, Boyfriends sushi addiction is well catered for.

This blog is a mix of two visits, on my first visit I got simply overwhelmed by the sushi and stopped taking any photos and just started gorging myself. On the second visit I was more restrained as we had ample time to waste before our movie screening in Dendy.

Hero definitely makes a statement as your walking past, the only significant difference I can see however, is the stacking of the sushi plates on the train. It certainly amps up the visual appeal and one of my favourite things about sushi train is what you see if what you get and there’s no waiting for your food to arrive! We are seated by a staff member and she takes our drink order. I must say I’m certainly used to grabbing drinks myself from the fridges so it’s a pleasant change.

In our first visit we sat at one of the little tables (as there were four of us) around the perimeter of the train and on our second, we sat in the centre of the room.

Various platters of sushi – spring rolls, seaweed inari, prawn and crab, chicken avocado and salmon with black rice

On our second visit, I’ve started dabbling in vegetarianism again so had to order sushi from the waiters as opposed to eating solely off the train. Hero is authentically Japanese so sometimes there was difficultly communicating with the waiters but we managed to place our order. We waited and waited and waited. I checked in with another waitress after about 15minutes and then she said she would check where it was, she explained that they are freshly handmade so they take longer (which we already knew) but 15 minutes seems a bit too long, none the less we continued waiting and after another few minutes my sushi came out. Boyfriends took longer still and when the raw tuna and avocado hand roll arrived it had no avocado. We asked the waiter about it and then they fixed it (after more waiting). While the handrolls did look very good and tasted even better, I doubt I would wait so long again. This hasn’t been the case at other sushi trains when we have ordered.

The seaweed inari was enormous this time as well 🙂

Though I requested the vege sushi roll, the waiter fished one off the train that was already prepared that I hadnt spotted.

Despite our hiccup in ordering, I would absolutely recommend Hero sushi, especially since they have hello pandas for dessert!

IMG_2327 IMG_2323 IMG_2328

If you havent tried these, then your sushi experience isnt complete! They had numerous other desserts, in the shape of little coloured balls, but despite our best efforts we couldnt convince ourself to try them.

Service – 3/5 generally very friendly but we did have a hard time ordering

Food – 4/5 delicious!

Atmosphere – 4/5 excellent location and the train is really well set up

Value – 4/5 the value really depends on yourself, as you are selecting the sushi. We found the hand rolls were really good value as they were larger than the regular sushi but priced the same. We generally pay about $50 for the both of us to be well fed so I wouldnt consider that an expensive meal.

IMG_2314 IMG_2324

Total – 15/20

While we havent decided which sushi place is our favourite, Hero is a definite contender for the top spot.
